Artist's Statement
Inspired by years of observing life through the lens of a microscope, Caren seeks to communicate beauty in glass creations, turning the enquiring mind of a scientist to explore light transmission with mathematical geometry.

Hypotrochoids are mathematical curves traced by a point in a circle rolling around the inside of a bigger circle. Caren has applied the geometry of hypotrochoids to the process of creating in glass leading to a body of work, The H Collection. Each piece offers a playful expression of a single subject with the overarching theme of hypotrochoids uniting them all, a process that connects the artist with their childhood enjoyment of a Spirograph toy.

Hailing from the historic market town of Chippenham on the edge of the Cotswolds, Caren has sought tuition from established artists across the globe, including Bob Leatherbarrow, Silvia Levenson and Catherine Dunstan, which has allowed her to build a skills base that directly supports their creative endeavours.

A keen collaborator and member of the UK glass community, Caren has worked with other artists including Sally Cartwright and Vicki Young, in the pursuit of artworks that utilise various skills and perspectives, allowing the artworks to expand far beyond the originally conceived ideas.

Caren's glass art has gained recognition by internationally renowned glass artists when Heart Felt (an anatomical dissection of a heart) was awarded 2nd prize in the premier LWAGA Glass Art Competition.

Other projects in the creative pipeline include more visceral concepts, as they seek to reflect and engage a more emotional response in their glass creations.

“The beauty of glass for me is in the light it transmits but glass is also a very tactile art form, so I encourage you to feel the textures that have been fused into the layers, from a myriad of glass inclusions, metal, bubbles and even braille.”
